Chimney Service Across the San Fernando & Conejo Valley
Clean Flue Chimney Care works from Sherman Oaks across the San Fernando & Conejo Valley and nearby cities. Each city page names its permit office, its fire zone and air rules, and what they mean for your chimney.

valley floor and hillside streets on both sides of Ventura Boulevard
Sherman Oaks
Sherman Oaks is part of the City of Los Angeles, so chimney permits here come from the Department of Building and Safety. Many ranch houses on the flats still carry the masonry chimney they were built with, and plenty of those were cracked in the 1994 Northridge earthquake and patched only at the top.
unincorporated foothill community below the San Gabriel Mountains
Altadena
Altadena is unincorporated, so chimney and fireplace permits go through Los Angeles County rather than a city. Much of the community is rebuilding after the January 2025 Eaton Fire, and a fireplace in a rebuilt home is new construction that has to meet current code from the ground up.
Westside neighborhood rising from Sunset Boulevard into the Santa Monica Mountains
Brentwood
Brentwood is part of the City of Los Angeles, so permits come from the Department of Building and Safety. Large homes here often have two or three chimneys, and a Level 2 for a sale scans each flue separately.
its own city at the east end of the Valley below the Verdugo Mountains
Burbank
Burbank runs its own building division, so chimney permits here are issued by the City of Burbank rather than Los Angeles. Many older bungalows still have unlined or clay-lined masonry chimneys, which is the first thing a Level 2 checks before an insert goes in.
its own city in the hills west of the Valley along the 101
Calabasas
Calabasas has its own building department, so permits here are issued by the city. Many homes sit in planned communities whose associations also review exterior changes, so a new chimney cap or a rebuilt chase may need their sign-off as well as the city's.
large lots between the Sepulveda Basin and the hills above Ventura Boulevard
Encino
Encino is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood, and its permits come from the Department of Building and Safety. Larger remodels here often add a second fireplace or an outdoor one, and each new gas appliance needs its own permit and inspection.
its own city between the Verdugo Mountains and the Los Angeles River
Glendale
Glendale has its own building and safety division, so permits here do not go through Los Angeles. Many of its 1920s homes still have masonry chimneys from before modern seismic rules, and a rebuild has to add the reinforcing and anchoring those chimneys never had.
the city itself, from the Valley to the Westside and the Eastside hills
Los Angeles
Every neighborhood inside city limits, from Van Nuys to Silver Lake, gets its chimney permits from the Department of Building and Safety. After the 1994 Northridge earthquake the city saw a large share of its masonry chimneys damaged, and many were rebuilt as framed chases with metal flues.
its own city at the foot of the San Gabriels with many historic districts
Pasadena
Pasadena issues its own building permits, and homes in its landmark and historic districts can also need design review for visible exterior work. A chimney rebuild there may have to match the original brick and profile while still meeting current seismic rules.
canyon streets and flats along the eastern Santa Monica Mountains
Studio City
Studio City sits inside the City of Los Angeles, so an insert, a rebuild or a new gas line is permitted through the Department of Building and Safety. Steep canyon lots mean many chimneys here rise two stories on the downhill side, which changes how a Level 2 is done and what a rebuild costs.
the southwest corner of the Valley up against the Santa Monica Mountains
Woodland Hills
Woodland Hills is in the City of Los Angeles, so permits run through the Department of Building and Safety. Many houses from the 1970s have a metal factory-built fireplace, and those can only take an insert or gas logs if the label inside the firebox allows it.
a separate city since 1984, on the flats below the Hollywood Hills between Hollywood and Beverly Hills
West Hollywood
West Hollywood runs its own Building and Safety office, so a reline, a rebuild or a gas insert here is permitted by the city rather than by LADBS. Many homes are duplexes or small multi-unit buildings, and one chimney stack can carry flues for more than one unit. Our report notes which flue serves which unit, because an inspector will ask.
