What's Included
NFPA 211 calls for a chimney to be cleaned when deposits build up enough to raise the risk of a fire. Our sweep clears soot and creosote from the firebox to the cap, under drop cloths and a sealed vacuum. While the flue is open we look at the damper, the smoke chamber and the spark arrestor, and we tell you whether any of them falls short of the rule. You leave with a dated record and photos.
What NFPA 211 Actually Says About Cleaning a Flue
Most chimney work in California is measured against NFPA 211, the standard for chimneys, fireplaces and vents published by the National Fire Protection Association. It does not set a calendar date for sweeping. It says the system should be inspected once a year for soundness, deposits and clearances, and cleaned when that inspection finds buildup. The second half is what matters for a house in Sherman Oaks. A fireplace lit a dozen times over the holidays builds a different layer than one burning every weekend from November to March, and a gas log set that used to be a wood fireplace may still hold old creosote on the smoke shelf. So our sweep starts with a look, not a brush. We check the firebox, damper, smoke chamber and as much of the flue as the light reaches, grade the deposits, then clean. If the flue is clean enough that sweeping would only polish it, we tell you, and the visit becomes a Level 1 inspection at $54.
Sweeps sort creosote into three stages: a dry soot that brushes off, a flaky crust, and a hard tar glaze. The glaze is where chimney fires start, and a chimney fire inside a clay tile flue can crack the tiles, which turns a routine cleaning into a Level 2 inspection and possibly a relining job. That is the practical reason the standard ties cleaning to what is found. Across the Valley, the South Coast AQMD's Check Before You Burn season runs from November through February, and many owners burn on fewer nights because of it. Burning less does not remove the yearly look, though. Bird nests, fallen mortar and wind-blown leaves block flues that have not seen a fire in months. A sweep with a cap check catches those before the first cold night does.
A Sweep That Leaves a Record Behind
Most people never think about the paperwork from a chimney sweep until somebody asks for it, and somebody asks more often than you would expect. A buyer's home inspector writes "recommend evaluation by a qualified chimney professional." An insurer's renewal form asks when the wood-burning fireplace was last serviced. A claims adjuster after a chimney fire wants to know whether the flue was maintained. A receipt that says "swept" answers none of those. Our sweep record does: the date, the fuel type, the creosote stage we found, the condition of the damper and smoke chamber, whether a cap and spark arrestor were in place, and photos of anything we flagged. For Sherman Oaks homes in the hills south of Ventura Boulevard, we note the spark arrestor screen by itself, because fire officials in those zones look for one. You keep the record, and if you sell, it goes in the disclosure package.
Here is what the price covers and what it does not. From $220 covers sweeping one flue on a standard wood-burning fireplace, the firebox and smoke shelf, and the condition notes. A second flue, a heavily glazed flue that needs chemical treatment or rotary tools, or a camera run the full height of the flue are separate, and we say so before we start. If we find something the standard treats as a defect, such as a cracked flue tile, a missing section of liner or wood framing too close to the masonry, we do not repair it on the spot. We photograph it, explain which requirement it falls under, and send a written quote. You decide when and whether to do the work. Plenty of our sweeps in Sherman Oaks, Studio City and Encino end with nothing more than the record and a clean flue, which is the result we hope for.

CA
Chimney Sweep in Sherman Oaks
Sherman Oaks is part of the City of Los Angeles, so chimney permits here come from the Department of Building and Safety. Many ranch houses on the flats still carry the masonry chimney they were built with, and plenty of those were cracked in the 1994 Northridge earthquake and patched only at the top.

Chimney Sweep in Burbank
Burbank runs its own building division, so chimney permits here are issued by the City of Burbank rather than Los Angeles. Many older bungalows still have unlined or clay-lined masonry chimneys, which is the first thing a Level 2 checks before an insert goes in.

Chimney Sweep in Encino
Encino is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood, and its permits come from the Department of Building and Safety. Larger remodels here often add a second fireplace or an outdoor one, and each new gas appliance needs its own permit and inspection.

Chimney Sweep in Studio City
Studio City sits inside the City of Los Angeles, so an insert, a rebuild or a new gas line is permitted through the Department of Building and Safety. Steep canyon lots mean many chimneys here rise two stories on the downhill side, which changes how a Level 2 is done and what a rebuild costs.

Chimney Sweep in Woodland Hills
Woodland Hills is in the City of Los Angeles, so permits run through the Department of Building and Safety. Many houses from the 1970s have a metal factory-built fireplace, and those can only take an insert or gas logs if the label inside the firebox allows it.

Chimney Sweep in West Hollywood
West Hollywood runs its own Building and Safety office, so a reline, a rebuild or a gas insert here is permitted by the city rather than by LADBS. Many homes are duplexes or small multi-unit buildings, and one chimney stack can carry flues for more than one unit. Our report notes which flue serves which unit, because an inspector will ask.
