What's Included

When a gas fireplace will not light or shuts off, the fix has to keep the unit within its listing. We test the thermocouple or thermopile, the valve, the ignition module and the vent, and replace failed parts with ones the maker approves for that model. Any gas line work is leak tested before we leave. If a repair needs a permit, we tell you before starting.

Pilot light and ignition system repair
Thermocouple and thermopile replacement
Gas valve diagnosis and replacement
Direct-vent and ventless unit service
Remote control and wall switch repair
CO safety test after every repair

Diagnosing Gas Fireplace Faults in Order

Most gas fireplace failures come down to a short list of parts, and we test them in order rather than swapping parts until something works. A pilot that lights and then dies when you release the knob points to the thermocouple, the small rod that tells the gas valve the pilot is burning. A pilot that holds while the burner will not come on points to the thermopile, the wall switch or the wiring between them. A unit with electronic ignition that clicks and never lights may have a dirty igniter, a weak battery backup or a failing control module. A low flame can mean a partly blocked burner or a pressure problem at the valve. Each step is measured with a meter, so the quote names the part that failed and the reading that proves it.

Parts matter because of the listing. A gas fireplace is listed as a system, and the codes require repairs with the parts the manufacturer specifies. A universal thermocouple might light the pilot, but it can change how fast the safety shutoff closes, and an inspector or insurer can treat a unit with non-listed parts as altered. So we order by the model and serial number on the rating plate. Where a maker has discontinued a part, we say so and lay out the choices: an approved substitute the maker lists, a replacement valve kit, or replacing the unit. Every repair that opens the gas side ends with a leak test of each fitting we touched, a full burn with the glass on, and a carbon monoxide reading at the front of the unit.

Smells, Soot and When to Shut It Off

Some symptoms mean stop using the fireplace today. A gas smell near the unit when it is off, a hiss at the valve, or a strong smell that does not fade after the first minutes of a burn calls for closing the gas valve, leaving the house and calling the gas utility from outside. Black soot on the glass or on the wall above the opening means incomplete combustion, often from logs out of position, a blocked vent or an air shutter set wrong, and it comes with more carbon monoxide. A pilot flame that is yellow and lazy instead of blue and sharp means the same thing. A CO alarm that sounds while the fireplace runs is never a false alarm until it is proven to be one. In those cases we treat the call as urgent and check the vent and the burner first.

Gas fireplace repairs are quoted in writing after diagnosis, with the part, the labor and the reason. Most repairs take a single visit once the part is in hand. When an older unit has several parts failing at once, we put the cost of repair beside the cost of replacement: for comparison, we install gas inserts for $2,750 to $5,550 with the liner, while adding a direct-vent unit where none existed costs $4,450 to $8,950. Replacing the appliance usually involves a permit for the gas and venting work, which we arrange. We do not push replacement when a thermocouple will do, and the written diagnosis lets you get a second opinion on the same findings. Sherman Oaks owners often send a short video of the pilot and the burner trying to light, which helps us bring the likely part on the first trip.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Sherman Oaks

Sherman Oaks is part of the City of Los Angeles, so chimney permits here come from the Department of Building and Safety. Many ranch houses on the flats still carry the masonry chimney they were built with, and plenty of those were cracked in the 1994 Northridge earthquake and patched only at the top.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Burbank

Burbank runs its own building division, so chimney permits here are issued by the City of Burbank rather than Los Angeles. Many older bungalows still have unlined or clay-lined masonry chimneys, which is the first thing a Level 2 checks before an insert goes in.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Encino

Encino is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood, and its permits come from the Department of Building and Safety. Larger remodels here often add a second fireplace or an outdoor one, and each new gas appliance needs its own permit and inspection.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Studio City

Studio City sits inside the City of Los Angeles, so an insert, a rebuild or a new gas line is permitted through the Department of Building and Safety. Steep canyon lots mean many chimneys here rise two stories on the downhill side, which changes how a Level 2 is done and what a rebuild costs.

Gas Fireplace Repair in Woodland Hills

Woodland Hills is in the City of Los Angeles, so permits run through the Department of Building and Safety. Many houses from the 1970s have a metal factory-built fireplace, and those can only take an insert or gas logs if the label inside the firebox allows it.

Gas Fireplace Repair in West Hollywood

West Hollywood runs its own Building and Safety office, so a reline, a rebuild or a gas insert here is permitted by the city rather than by LADBS. Many homes are duplexes or small multi-unit buildings, and one chimney stack can carry flues for more than one unit. Our report notes which flue serves which unit, because an inspector will ask.
