What's Included

An insert is a listed appliance, so its manual governs the install. NFPA 211 treats adding one as a change of appliance, which calls for a Level 2 inspection first, and the code requires the insert to vent through a liner connected to its collar. We run a full stainless liner, connect the gas where needed, pull the permit and arrange the city's sign-off.

Gas, wood, and electric insert options
Existing masonry firebox compatibility check
Stainless steel liner installation included
Gas line connection for gas inserts
EPA-certified wood-burning inserts available
Manufacturer warranty registration included

The Rules Behind a Proper Insert Install

An insert is a listed appliance set inside an existing fireplace, and three rules shape how it goes in. First, it must be installed to its listing and the manufacturer's instructions, which set the clearances to the mantel and trim, the hearth protection in front, and how it connects to the chimney. Second, NFPA 211 treats adding an insert as a change of appliance, so the chimney needs a Level 2 inspection first to confirm it is sound and right for the new use. Third, the insert has to vent through a liner connected directly to it. Old installs that slid an insert into the firebox and let it exhaust into the open smoke chamber are the reason that rule exists: the exhaust cooled, built heavy creosote and leaked fumes into the room. Our standard is a full-height stainless liner from the insert to the top of the chimney, sized to the insert's flue collar and finished with a spark arrestor cap.

A gas insert involves gas piping and an appliance connection, and a wood insert puts a new appliance into a chimney, so in Sherman Oaks and the rest of the City of Los Angeles the install takes a permit from the Department of Building and Safety, with an inspection when the work is done. Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, Calabasas and West Hollywood issue their own permits, and Altadena goes through Los Angeles County. We pull the permit, book the inspection and leave you the signed-off card along with the insert's manual. A wood insert has to be EPA-certified, which every new wood insert sold today is, and wood burning in the Valley still follows the South Coast AQMD's winter no-burn alerts. Owners who want a fire on any winter night tend to pick gas for that reason alone.

Gas, Wood or Electric, and What Each One Costs

Gas inserts are the most common choice in Sherman Oaks. They light at a switch, burn on no-burn days, and set into a drafty open fireplace they turn it into a working heater. Installed, a gas insert runs $2,750 to $5,550. That covers the insert, the liner from the insert to the top, the gas connection at the unit, the surround panel and the labor to fit it. The range follows the insert's size and features, the firebox dimensions, chimney height and roof access, and how far the gas supply sits from the fireplace. If no gas line reaches the fireplace yet, the extension is added to the quote and to the permit. Wood inserts are quoted by model and suit owners who burn often and want heat without a gas bill, within the no-burn rules. Electric inserts need no venting or gas, only a properly rated outlet, and are quoted by model too.

Before you choose, measure the fireplace opening: width at the front and back, height and depth. Send those numbers with a photo of the fireplace, plus the rating plate if it is factory-built. Some factory-built fireplaces are not listed to accept an insert at all, and then the honest options are a direct-vent gas fireplace in place of the old unit, or gas logs if the listing allows them. We tell you which applies before you pay for anything. Every insert install ends with a burn test, a CO reading and a walk-through of how to run it, how to clean the glass and what yearly service it needs. If you plan to sell within a few years, a permitted insert with its paperwork on file is a cleaner line in the disclosures than an old open fireplace marked for evaluation.

Fireplace Inserts in Sherman Oaks

Sherman Oaks is part of the City of Los Angeles, so chimney permits here come from the Department of Building and Safety. Many ranch houses on the flats still carry the masonry chimney they were built with, and plenty of those were cracked in the 1994 Northridge earthquake and patched only at the top.

Fireplace Inserts in Burbank

Burbank runs its own building division, so chimney permits here are issued by the City of Burbank rather than Los Angeles. Many older bungalows still have unlined or clay-lined masonry chimneys, which is the first thing a Level 2 checks before an insert goes in.

Fireplace Inserts in Encino

Encino is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood, and its permits come from the Department of Building and Safety. Larger remodels here often add a second fireplace or an outdoor one, and each new gas appliance needs its own permit and inspection.

Fireplace Inserts in Studio City

Studio City sits inside the City of Los Angeles, so an insert, a rebuild or a new gas line is permitted through the Department of Building and Safety. Steep canyon lots mean many chimneys here rise two stories on the downhill side, which changes how a Level 2 is done and what a rebuild costs.

Fireplace Inserts in Woodland Hills

Woodland Hills is in the City of Los Angeles, so permits run through the Department of Building and Safety. Many houses from the 1970s have a metal factory-built fireplace, and those can only take an insert or gas logs if the label inside the firebox allows it.

Fireplace Inserts in West Hollywood

West Hollywood runs its own Building and Safety office, so a reline, a rebuild or a gas insert here is permitted by the city rather than by LADBS. Many homes are duplexes or small multi-unit buildings, and one chimney stack can carry flues for more than one unit. Our report notes which flue serves which unit, because an inspector will ask.
