What's Included

A wood stove has to keep the clearances its listing sets to nearby walls and to the floor protection beneath it. We replace door gaskets, baffles, glass and firebrick, check the connector pipe and its joints, and measure those clearances as we work. New wood stoves must be EPA-certified, so if a replacement makes more sense than a repair, we will say so and quote both.

Baffle plate replacement
Firebrick and refractory repair
Door gasket and glass replacement
Catalytic combustor service
Air wash system cleaning
Stovepipe inspection and replacement

The Wear Parts and How They Fail

A wood stove is built around a few parts that wear out by design. The door and glass gaskets seal the firebox so the air controls work. Once they flatten or fray, the stove pulls extra air, burns hot and fast, and the controls stop doing much. The baffle above the fire makes gases burn before they leave, and a warped or cracked baffle sends more smoke and creosote up the chimney. Firebrick lines the firebox and protects the steel, so cracked bricks should be replaced before the steel behind them warps. Catalytic stoves carry a combustor that needs replacing every few seasons, depending on use. We test the door seal with a strip of paper closed in the door, inspect the baffle and bricks, check the combustor, and replace parts with the ones the maker lists for your model.

Repairs inside the stove only help if the setup around it is right. The listing label sets clearances to walls and furniture and the size and type of floor protection under and in front of the stove. The connector pipe from stove to chimney has its own rules for clearance, gauge and joints, with the crimped end of each section pointing down so condensed creosote runs back into the stove instead of out the seams. A stove too close to a wall that was later paneled, or sitting on a hearth pad smaller than the label calls for, is a common find. We measure and record those with every repair, and if the label is missing we say so, since an unlabeled stove has to meet much larger default clearances.

Older Stoves, EPA Rules and Burn Days

Stoves built before the EPA's certification program burn far dirtier than current models, and the federal limits for new wood heaters have tightened again since. An older stove from before that program can still be repaired and used where local rules allow, but the repair has limits: parts may not exist, and the stove will keep building creosote faster than a modern one. Across the Valley, wood burning is also limited by the South Coast AQMD's Check Before You Burn program, which bars wood fires on declared no-burn days from November through February. West Hollywood, Glendale and Pasadena fall under that same program. We tell you where your stove stands, so you can weigh repair against replacement for the way you actually burn.

Wood stove repairs are quoted in writing after we see the stove. Gaskets and a baffle make a short visit, while firebrick sets and catalytic combustors depend on the model and the parts lead time. If a sweep is due, pairing it with the repair saves a trip, and the sweep starts from $220. If the stove is a candidate for replacement, we can compare an EPA-certified wood unit against a gas insert at $2,750 to $5,550 installed. Before you book, photograph the label on the back of the stove, the stove where it sits, and the pipe where it enters the wall or ceiling. That lets us read the model's manual, bring the right gasket rope and cement, and spot any clearance question before we reach your Sherman Oaks home.

Wood Stove Repair in Sherman Oaks

Sherman Oaks is part of the City of Los Angeles, so chimney permits here come from the Department of Building and Safety. Many ranch houses on the flats still carry the masonry chimney they were built with, and plenty of those were cracked in the 1994 Northridge earthquake and patched only at the top.

Wood Stove Repair in Burbank

Burbank runs its own building division, so chimney permits here are issued by the City of Burbank rather than Los Angeles. Many older bungalows still have unlined or clay-lined masonry chimneys, which is the first thing a Level 2 checks before an insert goes in.

Wood Stove Repair in Encino

Encino is a City of Los Angeles neighborhood, and its permits come from the Department of Building and Safety. Larger remodels here often add a second fireplace or an outdoor one, and each new gas appliance needs its own permit and inspection.

Wood Stove Repair in Studio City

Studio City sits inside the City of Los Angeles, so an insert, a rebuild or a new gas line is permitted through the Department of Building and Safety. Steep canyon lots mean many chimneys here rise two stories on the downhill side, which changes how a Level 2 is done and what a rebuild costs.

Wood Stove Repair in Woodland Hills

Woodland Hills is in the City of Los Angeles, so permits run through the Department of Building and Safety. Many houses from the 1970s have a metal factory-built fireplace, and those can only take an insert or gas logs if the label inside the firebox allows it.

Wood Stove Repair in West Hollywood

West Hollywood runs its own Building and Safety office, so a reline, a rebuild or a gas insert here is permitted by the city rather than by LADBS. Many homes are duplexes or small multi-unit buildings, and one chimney stack can carry flues for more than one unit. Our report notes which flue serves which unit, because an inspector will ask.
